Where have you been?

So, I started a blog and hardly write/update it. That sucks. Sorry to the four people who follow me. A lot has been happening and I’m trying to regain my focus. Anyway, what relaxes me, excites me and, more importantly, what motivates me, than anything else is music. I was thinking this week about the type of content to post. There are a million top [insert number] lists out there.

What are you doing now?

What I decided to do was to focus on a list of just ten songs. A friend, who did not like Kanye West, asked me for my top 5 Kanye songs. That was impossible. So I made a list of 10 songs that moved me, and added I Love Kanye as a bonus track. Because, well, we all miss the old Kanye. That straight from the go Kanye. The chop up the soul Kanye, the set on his goals Kanye. You know what I mean? Good.

Can we get to the music?

Keeping that same top ten vibe, I wanted to highlight some R&B love songs that touched me. Certain criteria was key: Limiting this to only TEN songs was very tough. The lyrics had to move me. I didn’t want a song about how much a person wants to have sex. I wanted to find those songs about how a person feels when they are in love — or think they are. What do you tell your friends and family about what you think when this person crosses your mind? This was key: Music about how you love a person and how being in love feels. Or how being loved felt. Equally important is the delivery and the overall emotion.

Who cares? Take me to the list!

Wait, there’s more. Really?

I have one last thing to add then I’ll shut up and let you get to the list. Have you listened to a lyrics of When Did You Stop Loving Me, When Did I Stop Loving You by Marvin Gaye? See, this song hits me deep. It’s is how I felt before, during and after my divorce. Anyone out there ever dealt with a breakup? Sure you did. It’s a loss, a death, you are in mourning. Marvin’s opening was not about being in love. It’s about a love that’s lost. Read this:

You know, when you say your marriage vows,
they’re supposed to be for real.
I mean, If you think back to what you really said.
You know, about, honor and loving,
and obeying ‘till death do us part and all.
But it shouldn’t be that way.
It should. It should, it shouldn’t be lies because it turns out to be lies
If you don’t honor what you said, you lie to God.
The words should be changed

Good Lord.

Finally. The list.

So When Did You Stop Loving Me, When Did I Stop Loving You song is not on my list, but if you’re not familiar with it, please give it a listen. I point this out because this list is about being in love, from an R&B standpoint. Do I think that each day is about rainbows and moonbeams? No. There’s heartbreak songs we’ll get into later. There’s 3 honorable mentions at the end of this playlist. I think you’ll see why. For now, press play and let me know what you think. Am I off base? Did I miss a song, or two or three? Have you never been in love? Maybe you don’t like R&B, I don’t know — or care.
